More than half of UK employees (63%) will be at work at Christmas Eve according to a study by fashion brand Cotton Traders. Over 30% will work on Christmas Day itself.
Almost half of those surveyed said that they will do so to earn extra income, with 41% expecting to receive double pay for working at Christmas. Just under 30% stated altruistically that they plan to work so that their colleagues can take the time off instead. 40% of respondents said that they have no choice about working over the festive period.
Almost 80% of 18 to 24 year olds are set to work at Christmas, more than any other age group.
The study found some stark regional variations. Employees in the South West are the most likely to work, whilst employees in the North of England are the most likely to take time off. Meanwhile more than 70% of Londoners expect that they will have to drop into work at some point over the festive season.

One person who won’t be working this holiday is the man who attached his Christmas wish list to a job application rather than his CV.
Adam Clery, Managing Director at website WhatCulture, thought that the attachment may have been a clever trick. Yet, unfortunately for the applicant, it was a genuine mistake.
When Clery realised this he decided to share the mishap on Twitter. He tweeted: “Today a man applied for a job with us, and has accidentally attached his Xmas list instead of his CV.”
The tweet has so far received over 1,000 likes.
Clery did not reveal the job seeker’s name, but his folly is a lesson for everyone over the festive period. Whether you are covering for colleagues this Christmas or applying for a fresh start in 2016, make sure that you send the right attachments to the right people!
