More healthcare professionals given powers to sign Fit Notes

By June 29, 2022October 10th, 2022HR Research, Legal Update, Top Tip

From 1 July 2022, nurses, occupational therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists will be able to certify fit notes – something that before that date only GPs or hospital doctors could legally do.

Note that as fit notes can only be issued following an assessment of a person’s fitness for work, they cannot be issued on request or via over-the-counter services. So if this is provided by a pharmacist, it will be after a consultation with the individual.

Therefore as employers you should not be surprised to see a change in who signs the medical certificates that employees provide.
