A new survey has revealed that job satisfaction amongst UK employees is now at its lowest level in two years.

The stark findings come after the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, surveyed 2,000 employees and discovered that private sector works have the lowest job satisfaction.

Staff in all industries said that they now felt less satisfied at work and 24 per cent said they are looking for new work. Based on size of organisation, workers at small companies were the most satisfied with their job, but they did also report being more frustrated with their work.

A fifth of employees blamed their dissatisfaction on their company’s performance management process, claiming it was unfair. The poll also discovered that more than one in four workers were unhappy with the opportunities available to be able to further their career or even to develop their skills.

But there were some positive findings from the survey. There was an increase of 3 percent in staff feeling satisfied with their line manages compared to two years before. Also, slightly more employees reported to be satisfied rather than dissatisfied with their current rate of pay.

With the survey revealing that there has been an 8 per cent drop in satisfaction rates since the same survey was conducted in 2014, organisations may need to rethink their approach to employee career management to engage their staff and encourage them to stay.

Dominique Jones, Chief People Officer at Halogen Software, said: “These figures demonstrate a clear need for employers to shift their approach to performance management, to make it an on-going part of the rhythm of work, not a separate, once-a year-burden.

“Regular one-on-one conversations between line managers and employees can help improve employee engagement and satisfaction when used to identify new opportunities for employees to develop, ensure clarity on goals and expectations, and to provide employees coaching and feedback related to performance outcomes.”

“HR plays a critical role here in supporting line managers, guiding them and providing them with the right tools to enable them to listen, measure and act on employee needs.”
