The General Election 2019 | HR Solutions

As a result of Parliament not supporting the Conservative Withdrawal Bill, at the third time of attempting on  29th October 2019 a General Election was called. The General Election is set for 12th December 2019.  As per the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011, Parliament was dissolved on 6 November 2019, 25 days prior to the general election.  Normal business has therefore ceased while MPs are re-elected.

However, as it stands the UK is still set to leave the EU on 31st January 2020. This is however dependant on which party leader will be in office after the upcoming General Election, their Brexit pledge, and also whether or not they have a majority.  The Brexit conversation is likely to carry on far into 2020.

Brexit – Withdrawal Agreement Bill

The day before Parliament was dissolved, the Constitution Committee published an interim report on the constitutional issues in the Withdrawal Agreement Bill.  The report looked at several aspects of the Bill including:

  • The Withdrawal Agreement’s implementation period;
  • Citizens’ and workers’ rights;
  • The Ireland/Northern Ireland protocol to the Withdrawal Agreement;
  • Several broad secondary law-making powers;
  • The complex ongoing relationship to EU law both during the implementation period to 31 December 2020 and for the life of the Withdrawal Agreement; and
  • Parliamentary sovereignty.
