Furlough extended to end of June to protect millions of jobs

Furlough Extended 2020 | Coronavirus Job Retention | HR Solutions

On 17 April 2020 the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, announced that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) has been extended by one month until the end of June 2020.

This extension provides businesses with some added certainty in helping them to protect millions of jobs; and will help to enable businesses to get back to work as soon as it is safe to do so, in order to drive the UK economic recovery.

Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme: 19 March to 30 June 2020

The CJRS allows businesses to furlough eligible employees by applying for grants in which the government would pay up to 80% of employees’ wages up to a maximum of £2,500 per month per employee. The CJRS eligibility was also recently amended to now be applicable to employees on HMRC submissions on or before 19 March 2020; and is now extended to apply until 30 June 2020.

UK Economic Recovery

The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, said:

“We’ve taken unprecedented action to support jobs and businesses through this period of uncertainty, including the UK-wide Job Retention Scheme. With the extension of the coronavirus lockdown measures yesterday (17 April 2020), it is the right decision to extend the furlough scheme for a month to the end of June to provide clarity.

It is vital for people’s livelihoods that the UK economy gets up and running again when it is safe to do so, and I will continue to review the scheme so it is supporting our recovery.”
